The Sint Maarten Telecommunication Holding Company N.V. (hereinafter “the Holding Company”) has been established to manage the assets and liabilities and to consolidate the accounts of the companies: Sint MaartenTelecommunication Operating Company N.V. (hereinafter “the Operating Company”); Sint Maarten Telephone Company (TelEm) N.V. ; TelCell N.V.; SMITCOMS N.V., SMITCOMS Inc. and SMITCOMS Dominicana S.R.L.
Sint Maarten Telecommunication Operating Company N.V.
Sint Maarten Telecommunication Operating Company N.V. was formally established by a resolution of the Executive Council of Sint Maarten in November 2006. The Operating Company will execute all the operations of the working companies -Sint Maarten Telephone Company (TelEm) N.V.; TelCell N.V.; SMITCOMS N.V.; SMITCOMS Inc. and SMITCOMS Dominicana S.R.L.
Sint Maarten Telephone Company (TelEm) N.V. and TelNet Communications N.V.
Sint Maarten Telephone Company (TelEm) N.V. was formally established in September 1975 and is a government owned landline service provider charged with maintaining the local fixed telecommunications infrastructure. TelEm provides all services necessary to facilitate third parties once concessions have been granted by the Bureau of Telecommunications which is based in Curacao. TelNet Communication N.V. (Telnet) was an Internet Service Provider (ISP) and was formally established in February 1999. Telnet used to be a subsidiary of TelEm and as of August 2008 Telnet was merged into TelEm.
Mobile carrier TelCell N.V. was established in October 1998 and is also a government-owned telecommunication company serving business and residential clients on the Dutch side of Sint Maarten. TelCell offers CDMA, GSM and GPRS services island wide. The company’s services have been pioneering in all respects, being first to bring digital telephony, SMS services, roaming services and mobile wi-fi services to mobile subscribers in Sint Maarten.
St. Maarten International Telecommunication Services (SMITCOMS) N.V. and SMITCOMS Inc.
SMITCOMS N.V. was established in May 2000 and is an international telecommunications service provider as well as a wholesaler and retail bandwidth provider for Sint Maarten, the Netherlands Antilles and the Caribbean. The company has a subsidiary, SMITCOMS Inc. which was established in 2003 in the USA. SMITCOMS Inc. is 100% owned by SMITCOMS N.V. SMITCOMS N.V. has an international telecommunications’ concession for Sint Maarten, Curacao, Saba and St. Eustatius.
SMITCOMS N.V. and SMITCOMS Dominicana Srl.
SMITCOMS Dominicana S.R.L. was incorporated on February 25, 2010 in Sto. Domingo, Dominican Republic. The purpose of SMITCOMS Dominicana S.R.L. is the operation of the telecommunication infrastructure in the Caribbean for interinsular and international telecommunications services. SMITCOMS Dominicana S.R.L. is partially-owned by SMITCOMS N.V. and Smitcoms Inc. New concession agreements were signed in 2010 in anticipation that the new company could begin with an international calling card and data service in 2017.
Caribbean Teleview Services N.V.
(St. Maarten Cable TV) became part of the TelEm Group of companies in January 2017, when the company was purchased. It provides fixed internet service and cable TV service to the St. Maarten population, offering more than 80 channels to tele viewers throughout the island. Founded in October 1987, St. Maarten Cable TV has undergone many transformations, including a major move of the company’s overhead cable network to an underground cable network following a devastating hurricane in 1995 that all but destroyed the company’s extensive network that was in place at the time. St. Maarten Cable TV offers local programming on the local channel, TV15, as well as regional and international programming and high-speed internet over cable.
